"Senior administration officials who briefed reporters on some of the details of Mr. Obama’s proposal said that the plan also counts a savings of $1.1 trillion from the ending of the American combat mission in Iraq and the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan."

Sorry - that’s not a spending cut that you can count.  So we’re down to $1.9 billion dollars.  $1.5 billion from tax increases, OK that’s $400 billion in entitlement cuts. Drop in the bucket. UNACCEPTABLE.

What about raising the social security age to double or triple your savings on entitlements? (SWAGging it, but you get the idea.)  Until we are courageous enough to start talking about the third rail this is all pointless rhetoric.

Mr. President - you have the opportunity to lead a truly important initiative that will leave this country more secure and ready to grow.  Please take it.  You can do so while winning the middle and not alienating your base.  Make the argument and get it done, for the good of America.  Talk to the Gang of Six - they already have a solid plan.

That said, please don’t interpret this as me siding with anybody on the opposite side of the aisle.  The proposed cuts are not class warfare, and nobody in Washington has had the strength to own up to the entitlement cuts that have to happen in the next few years.

Smart cuts in the right places, not cuts for cheap points. Logic can prevail. (Vote for me in 2034?)
